VETERANS’ MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN
Grandview, Missouri
Larkin engineers designed the Veterans Memorial Fountain to replace a fountain located at the entrance to Grandview City Hall.
The project was inspired by a variety of problems with the original fountain. The nozzles on the fountain produced a water stream that was too high for the diameter of the fountain's basin. Sprayed and wind-blown water, however, was not merely a nuisance; it led to a need for increased water make up and prevented continuous fountain operation. Water loss from leaks in the facility's underground piping further hindered the fountain's operation.
Goals for the new fountain project included improvement of appearance, design of a nozzle system and water effect suitable for the fountain's size and location and improvement of the fountain's mechanical and electrical systems.
The new fountain consists of an upper pool with three aerated nozzles, a stepped-brick transition from the upper pool to a lower pool, and low-voltage underwater lights. The overall water effect the fountain provides is a low, massed mound of aerated water. The stepped brick also produces a highly aerated effect.
Construction for the $125,000 project was completed in spring 1993.
