RENOVATION OF EXISTING FACILITY
Merriam, Kansas
The City of Merriam's interest in adding family recreation enhancements to an aquatic facility on a very restrictive site created a special design challenge for Larkin Aquatics engineers. Our engineers met with a planning committee to discuss new goals for their facility, which included upgrading their facility and adding fun features to increase attendance.
The Merriam municipal pool is located in an urban area where there is little room for expansion. The existing 15-year-old facility, originally designed by Larkin, included a 50-meter combination swimming/diving pool with a 25-meter short course, a combination wading/training pool, filter building, and bathhouse.
Larkin Aquatics used the professional expertise of our designers to create a conceptual design that worked within the existing layout, but also included the addition of many other recreational components. A new plunge pool with two water slides was constructed as well as a center dolphin rock structure feature with an "old man and the sea" serpent theme around a kiddie slide, providing new water activities for all ages.
A new wading pool was constructed to accommodate the young children in the community and the parking lot was expanded to make room for more pool visitors.
This $1 million project was completed in May 1999.
